The Skin & Cancer Foundation Inc. (S&CF) is a not for profit, DGR registered organisation which provides specialist treatment, education and research for a wide variety of skin disorders. Established in 1987 and founded by a group of professional Dermatologists the Skin and Cancer Foundation Inc. is one of Australia’s leading Dermatology Centres and is at the forefront of delivering healthy skin by Dermatologists.
The Skin and Cancer Foundation Inc. Research arm makes a vital contribution to the study of skin diseases in Australia and has been responsible for conducting many clinical trials over the years as well as supporting projects co-ordinated through St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne Department of Dermatology.
The Foundation has been an investigative site for over fifty clinical trials, most with Associate Professor Peter Foley BMedSc, MBBS, MD, FACD as Principal Investigator. He is supported by senior dermatologists and clinical researchers Associate Professor Chris Baker and Dr Alvin Chong, along with an experienced team of clinical trials nurse coordinators and clinical trials administration officers. The unit is managed by Dana Middleton. Christine Zahren, who has been managing the unit since 2012, has moved into a trials strategy and development role.
All staff are GCP trained and dangerous goods certified. The unit also has its own standard operating procedures providing guidance around trail-related procedures such as Informed Consent, Pharmacy processes, Equipment Maintenance and Calibration, Adverse Event Recording and Reporting, Storage and Retention of Essential documents etc.
The Skin & Cancer Foundation Inc has convenient access to a radiology facility within the building and all pathology samples are collected on site by staff.
The Skin & Cancer Foundation Inc is signed on as a collaborator with Probity Medical Research (PMR), a Canadian base clinical trials consortium presided over by Dr Kim Papp a world authority on designing, implementing and conducting clinical trials. PMR provide key support with:
• Regulatory document preparation
• Ethics committee submissions
• Budget and contract review and negotiations
• Study logistics and support
The Skin & Cancer Foundation Inc research unit has experienced internal and ethics committee audits with no findings. We have a commitment to delivering the best possible patient care through our dedication to good clinical practice and supporting ongoing education and professional development of staff.
